Artist Statement Exhibition Photos

Sharing my art with friends and neighbors publicly at Fornax Bread Company during Roslindale Open Studios is my first attempt at going solo.

Taken together, the works are meant to be about the way we see, not just what we see. Taken individually, the works are about that ethereal quality of objects, when moments get crystallized by sunlight.

“Going Solo” features singular figures (ranging from a dog, to a businessman, to an ancient sculpture) paired with pictures of the worlds they see, both real and imagined, prompting questions such as How does this person see the world? or Whose viewpoint is this?

I started asking myself those questions with a new intensity about four years ago when I learned I had been unconsciously wrestling with convergence insufficiency, a vision disorder with symptoms that include diplopia (or double vision). Until that point, I thought everyone saw the world the way I did: through a narrow window, often one eye at a time, without full binocular vision, occupying space in only two dimensions.

Everyday tasks—like walking, reading, and picking up objects—were exhausting struggles to make logical sense of visual information. With the help of doctors and my spouse, I embarked on a physical and mental training process to re-learn how to see the world—how to make my eyes work together—a process I will practice every day for the rest of my life.

It occurred to me that the questions I began asking myself when I learned of my condition are the same questions that we all ask ourselves figuratively everyday as we grow and mature. Those questions, whether about physiological or metaphorical views of the world, provide a lens through which one can interpret the works in “Going Solo”: How do you see the world, and how do you see yourself in it? How is your focus and scope informed by context?

My hope is that these snapshots glisten around the edges in your mind’s eye and celebrate the beauty of life.

“Going Solo” will be at Fornax Bread Company, 27 Corinth Street, Roslindale, MA, from November 7 - 30.
